Why Exercise Feels Like a Chore — And the CALM Filter That Changed Everything

For a long time, I thought the answer was to push harder.

The truth is, exercise has never come easily to me. I’ve never been one of those people who naturally loves movement, finds a sport they adore, or gets such a strong endorphin hit that it pulls them back in again and again. I’ve never had that one thing that made exercise feel effortless or exciting enough to override my reluctance. I’d look at other people who seemed to enjoy it, who made it look easy, and wonder why I couldn’t just make myself do the same. But the more I pressured myself, the more resistant I felt.

And because of that, maintaining any kind of consistency always felt impossible. Exercise became another thing on my to-do list. Another thing I “should” be doing. Another place where I felt behind, guilty, or like I was failing.

That’s what led me to create the CALM filter — a simple, four-part decision-making framework that helps you make choices that feel grounded, honest, and sustainable.

What is the CALM filter?

The CALM filter is a decision-making framework for women who feel overwhelmed by choices, expectations, and the pressure to “do it all.”

CALM stands for:

  • Capacity

  • Alignment

  • Less

  • Momentum

Capacity: Do I actually have space for this?

The first question in the CALM filter is always about capacity. Not, “What do I think I should be doing?” But, “What capacity do I actually have today?” Some days, my capacity for movement is a proper workout. Some days, it’s a walk. Some days, it’s stretching. And some days, it’s rest. When I started honouring my real capacity instead of my imagined one, I stopped living in that constant cycle of push, crash, guilt, repeat.

Use capacity to decide:

  • Whether to take on another commitment.

  • Whether to say yes to a social plan.

  • Whether to keep something on your plate that you already know is too much.

Alignment: Does this support who I want to be?

Sometimes we’re not doing something because it feels right. We’re doing it because it helps us feel “good enough.” I had to ask myself whether I was exercising to support myself — or to punish myself into being who I thought I should be.

Alignment asks: Does this choice match the values, energy, and identity I’m trying to build? For me, that means choosing movement that supports my nervous system rather than spikes my stress.

Use alignment for:

  • Work projects and boundaries.

  • Spending and time commitments.

  • Relationships and social plans.

Less: Where can I reduce the pressure?

We’re constantly told that more is better. More effort. More intensity. More output. More pressure to keep proving we’re doing enough. But in reality, so many women don’t need more. They need less. Less friction.

Less perfectionism. Less overcomplication. Less of the feeling that every decision has to be big, impressive, or all-or-nothing. When I softened my approach to exercise and stopped expecting every session to be intense or “worth it,” I actually became more consistent.

That’s the quiet power of less.

Momentum: What is the smallest step forward?

Momentum is built in the smallest ways. One walk. One stretch. One honest no. When I stopped waiting to feel fully motivated and started asking, “What is the smallest step I can take today?”, I began to trust myself more.

How to use the CALM filter in everyday life

The beauty of this decision-making framework is that it’s not just for big choices. Use the CALM filter when:

  • Whether to accept a new project.

  • Whether to go to an event.

  • Whether to stay in or cancel plans.

  • Whether to rest instead of pushing through.

  • Whether something truly fits your season of life.

Simply pause and ask:

  1. Do I have the capacity?

  2. Is this aligned?

  3. Where can I create less pressure?

  4. What’s the smallest action?

That pause can change everything. Because instead of living reactively, you start living more intentionally.

The women I work with are often carrying a lot — mentally, emotionally, practically. They’re trying to hold it all together while also wanting to feel more like themselves again. The CALM filter offers a way to come back to yourself without needing to overhaul your whole life overnight. It’s not about doing less forever. It’s about doing what actually supports you, instead of what simply looks like you’re coping.
